3 things besides art

that help you become a better artist

1. Learn and play music

“Sometimes you want to give up the guitar, you'll hate the guitar. But if you stick with it, you're gonna be rewarded.”

Beyond the benefits to your math skills you'll learn how to listen, collaborate, practice and speak in a musical language. Playing the instrument you like or even made (3d printers have such an advantage here) and rock the hell out of it can only be described as an out of body experience. Where you don't have to remember music theory and you can express your emotions with your body and this musical apparatus. The emotion or memory you bring up in others and yourself is such a powerful experience. It's worth the practice.

2. Learn a martial art

“Always be yourself, express yourself, have faith in yourself, do not go out and look for a successful personality and duplicate it.”

Bruce Lee

This will allow you to get in touch with your mind, body and your intention. Your mind will realize that your body is stronger than you could have imagined and can be used with precision to exact your intent. This is a huge realization that you can translate to your art immediately through the lack of fear in your brush/pen strokes. After gaining some insight into your martial art and how it benefits you the most common reward is the loss of fear. When you walk around without fear you can spend that energy thinking about your next creation. Or better yet, keeping those you care about safe. Find a martial art that's for you and start kicking some ass all over the place! KEE YAW!

3. Learn to meditate

“To understand the immeasurable, the mind must be extraordinarily quiet, still.”

Jiddu Krishnamurti

Nature of Mind by Alex Grey

People spend years in temples and caves in the pursuit of this silence and nothingness. You don't have to do any of this to practice meditation. The journey is the point of the goal. Tonight, try to sit and not worry, don't be afraid, don't think about how the hell are they gonna bring back Jon Snow? Is he gonna be part of the winter or the summer? Clear all from your mind and if you can't, all that you thought about was “the journey” and that's where lives are changed and forged.

With all these you will learn more about yourself on more than just a creative level. You have a chance to experience and learn so much about yourself and the world and in that, is an art form. The ultimate creation that truly connects and heals the world, yourself.

Please suggest other disciplines and what they have done to better your art and yourself. We want to try them all! Spread that love everywhere!
